stilwerk design gallery by engelhorn & turkiewicz
The stillwerk design gallery by engelhorn & turkiewicz presents a much anticipated and very promising show of pieces designed by highly esteemed international designers such as GRAFT and Ross Lovegrove as well as designs by upcoming Austrian artists on the occasion of its new opening.
Inspired by “Phantom”, an exclusively for stilwerk designed table by the GRAFT architects, the core idea of the show was developed from a concept of contemporary relavant lifestyle and design. Consequently, the show pieces manifest the various aspects of daily life such as cooking, eating, living, working, relaxing, or sleeping.
The “Polka Pots”, for instance, represent a set of black Email-Kitchen containers with various functions in the kitchen as cooking pots as well as flower vases or fruit baskets. The “Pools & Pouf!”, on the other hand, conjures up the sense and the sensory experience of relaxed living. These objects, which have been designed by – in Paris living Austrian designer – Robert Stadler, are fabric elements covering traditional furniture pieces with ironic statements written on them while they can be arranged casually and flexibly on the ground as well on the walls. Another exponent of the show is the Viennese design team mischer‘traxler, which is known for its experimental as well as conceptual design approach. Their designs break the bonds of puritan functionalism and relay along with the sensual and the sensory often a sense of political-economic standards. It is precisely in the works of designers such as Polka, mischer‘traxler, or Breaded Escalope that the interface between art and design is created and the cutting edge of both expanded. These designer take objects of mundane use and they change and modify them. These “mutations” confront us with mundane objects and their implementation in a novel way.
Consequently, this also poses the question of where and how these objects are to be ordered and categorized now. Are they pragmatic design objects or works of art; daily objects or sculptures? It is precisely in this blur that core concept of this show is developed in particular and the works of the gallery of Klaus Engelhorn & Michael Turkiewicz finds it expression and mission in general. The presentation of, and confrontation with, such notions and objects on the verge of art and design transcending mere functional furniture is the main purpose of this gallery. The goal of this gallery is the presntation of unique renowned international designers as well as historical pieces, and special editions of the young Austrian design scene. It is the goal of Engelhorn & Turkiewicz gallery to commission young designers with the development of prototypes and production of such design pieces.
